Understanding EMDR

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It is a type of therapy that helps people process painful, overwhelming, or traumatic experiences that may still affect them in the present.

During EMDR, the therapist guides the client through difficult memories while using gentle back-and-forth stimulation, such as eye movements, tapping, or sounds. This process can help the brain work through those experiences in a way that makes them feel less intense and easier to manage.

EMDR does not erase what happened. Instead, it can help reduce the emotional distress connected to the experience so it no longer feels as overwhelming.
